Hydrogen ions are released when #HNO_3# is added to pure water.

This is determined by looking at the ions that are present in each of these compounds. In order for hydrogen ions to be released, #H+# must be one of the ions present in the compound. since choices 1 & 2 do not even have an H in their formula, they cannot be correct.

Looking at choice 3 & 4, both have an H in the formula. However, the H in number 4 is in the form of a hydroxide ion, #OH^-#. When #KOH# splits apart, it will form #K^+# & #OH^-# ions.

Choice 3 will dissociate into #H^+# and #NO_3^-# ions. Thus, choice 3 is the only one that will produce #H^+# when added to pure water.
