Question #58654

1 Answer

Start with the balanced molecular equation.

#"3BaCl"_2("aq")"# + #"2K"_3"PO"_4("aq")"# #rarr# #"Ba"_3("PO"_4)_2("s")# + #"6KCl"("aq")#

The ions that form the solid precipitate, #"Ba"^(2+)# and #"PO"_4^(3-)# are the ion's in the net ionic equation. The other ion's that didn't react are the spectator ion's.

The net ionic equation:

#"3Ba"^(2+)("aq")# + #"2PO"_4^(3-)("aq")# #rarr# #"Ba"_3("PO"_4)_2("s")#

Here is another example which illustrates how to write a net ionic equation.
