The wave-function formulation is also known as the Schrodinger equation, and is named after the Austrian physicist Erwin Schrodinger. It was formulated in late 1925, and it describes how the quantum state of physical system changes with time.
The equation is given by:

where:
#i# is the imaginary unit
#ħ# is the reduced Planck constant
#∇^2# is the Laplacian
#Psi# is the wave function
#V# is the particle's potential energy
#r# and #t# are the spacial and time functions respectively

It is a linear partial differential equation describing the time-evolution of a system's wave function.
