What is osmotic pressure? What is isosmotic? What is hyposmotic?
1 Answer
Osmosis-Is the spontaneous passage of a pure solvent into a solution separated from it by a semi-permeable membrane, a membrane permeable to the solvent but not to the solute molecules.
Osmotic pressure-It is the pressure that must be applied to the solution to stop the inflow of the solvent ie. to prevent osmosis.
Iso-osmotic-Solutions containing the same concentration of particles and thus exerting the same osmotic pressures. Iso-osmotic solutions contain both penetrating as well as non penetrating solutes. They contain penetrating solutes that can enter and increase the osmotic pressure of the cell.
Isotonic solutions-Solutions exerting the same osmotic pressure.Unlike Iso-osmotic solutions, these contain only non-penetrating solutes. They are neither absorbed nor do they absorb anything from the cell.
Hypo-osmotic-Solution which has a lower osmotic pressure compared to the other solution.
