Why is neutralization a double replacement reaction?

Neutralization reactions occur between acids and bases producing a salt and water as products.
Here is an example:
HCl + NaOH -> HOH + NaCl
HCl = hydrochloric acid
NaH = sodium hydroxide (a base)
NaCl = table salt
HOH = water
- Note that we think of water as an ionic compound in this reaction - that is key to identifying this reaction as a double replacement reaction!
