Assuming the simplest case of a constant force, the work done in moving an object is given by the formula #W=Fs#, where #W# is the work done, #F# is the force applied and #s# the distanced moved.

Here #s=0# and so the work performed is also zero.

Of course, if we consider the boy's consumption of energy, it will not be exactly zero because his muscles actually moved (inside his body), while he was struggling to move the dog and so they did perform some work.
