Atomic number is the number of protons an element has in its atom.

In a neutrally charged atom, the number of protons is the same as the number of electrons.

Number of protons or Atomic Number = Number of electrons of an atom

If we were given the mass number and the number of neutrons in an atom, we can derive the number of protons or the atomic number.

Mass number = Number of protons + Number of Neutrons
