How do you write .5603 in scientific notation?

It's about moving the decimal point.

You move the dp untill there is just one non-zero digit in front of it.
The number of places you move is the 10-power.

If you've moved to the left , the 10-power is positive
If you've moved to the right , the 10-power is negative
(if you haven't moved at all the power is zero)

1234=1.234*10^3 moved 3 to left
0,01234=1.234*10^-2 moved 2 to the right
1.234=1.234*10^0 not moved
