All basic lab safety procedures should be followed.

I don't know how you are reacting the calcium carbonate. It will produce carbon dioxide in reactions with water or with acid.

Acid is obviously more hazardous.

Wear eye protection.
Reaction could produce heat - be aware.
Increasing concentration of acid will increase rate of reaction.
Don't perform in a sealed vessel - gas pressure will build up.
