To distort the electron cloud, for example, of a molecule. Polarizibility indicates how easily it happens for the polar molecule.
Simple (one-directional) polarizations might be shown in Debye units (D), and in these simple polarizations, dipole moments are shown as an arrow with a perpendicular line through the tail (indicating the positive end of the molecule).
