How do lightning rods serve to protect buildings from lightning strikes?

Well, consider that they are:
1) good conductors;
2) connected to ground (grounded).
Basically these rods become a perferct mean for the electricity (static electricity, in the air) to reach ground...much better than other objects such as buildings that are not so good conductors and so get protected by them.
