Why is the absolute value of 6 the same as the one from -6?

the function "absolute value" is defined like this:
|x|=
1. x if x>0
2.-x if x<0
so if x is egual to 6 |6|=6 because 6 is bigger then 0 and if x=-6 |-6|=-(-6)=6 because -6 is smaller then 0.
