Gear oil 90 is significantly more viscous than engine oil 15w40. It is more resistant to flow than engine oil.
Engine oil is listed here under "SAE Crankcase" and Gear oil is listed under "SAE Gear"
You can see that gear oil is the same viscosity range as 40, 50, or 60 weight engine oil. This means that gear oil could be much, much thicker than the 40 weight engine oil you are comparing it to.
