It would be a complete mess

Explanation:

In former times there were only local, or even individual units. A loaf of bread form one baker would be heavier than that of another.

Even the inch, foot or pound depended on the local magistrate.

The British were the first to standardise. All over the empire (including what was later to become the US), all units had the same meaning: a foot in America is the same foot in India, Canada or Great-Brittain.

But there was a small problem: 12 inch in a foot, 3 feet in a yard,... in a mile. And the same with areas, volumes and weights. All these calculations!

Then came the "Systeme Internationale", or the metric system.
Not only were the units inter-related, but (by using prefixes) they could also be upped or downed in decimal form:
#1mm=1/1000m, 1km=1000m#, etc.
