Earth is closest to the Sun at perihelion which is around 3 January. It is furthest at aphelion in Early July.
To simplify things a unit called the Astronomic Unit, or AU, has been defined which is based on the distance between the Earth and the Sun. The AU is now an official standard which is exactly 149,597,870,700 metres = 92,955,807 miles.
