William Taft

Explanation:

It's a pretty fun story, actually! Teddy Roosevelt (president from 1901-1909) and Willian Taft (incumbent, president from 1909-1913) we're pretty good friends until they both decided to gun for the presidency in 1912.

They took to insulting each other on the public stage which ultimately hurt them both. Though Roosevelt actually won every state primary (except Massachusetts), Taft won the majority of the caucuses that sent delegates to the Republican convention. Taft was selected at the convention as the Republican candidate. Roosevelt decided to run on the Progressive party ticket. They both eventually lost the presidential election to the Democratic candidate, Woodrow Wilson.
