To make glucose, the plant needs to make bonds between the carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms, which in turn come from CO2 and water. Sunlight cannot be used directly by plant to make glucose. This is why the energy coming from sun in the form of photons is first turned into ATP, the energy of which is later used to make the bonds in the glucose molecule.
