Explanation:

In a woodland, deciduous trees will shed leaves onto the floor which decompose providing nutrients into the soil. Other vegetation will follow a similar process.

Compare this to farmlands where crops once matured are extracted for consumption. Hence the nutrients that these plants absorb during growing are not retuned to the soil. Hence fertilisers are needed
