If an object is moving toward the origin it is convention to define that as being a negative displacement.

Explanation:

Usually we define displacement as positive if an object is moving away from (what is defined as) the origin. If the object is moving toward the origin we define that as a negative displacement.

If an object is moving away from the origin then its overall displacement (as measured from the origin) is increasing and vice versa if it is moving toward the origin.
