Mercury atoms when excited emit UV light

Explanation:

Electrons in Mercury are excited to higher energy levels by the collisions with electrons in the tube. As the electrons fall back to their ground sate, they emit UV light. This in turn is absorbed by the phosphor lining in the tube and the electrons in the phosphor become excited. However, when they de-excite they emit visible light.
