You can use a simple map compass. Without the magnet present, the compass arrow will point towards the earth's North Pole. The compass arrow is a magnet itself, and the end pointing north will be its north pole.
In compass terminology, "north pole" means North Pole seeking. The fact that is it attracted to the North Pole actually tells us that the earth's North Pole is in fact a magnetic
south pole (just to make life more difficult!)

So, if you bring a magnet towards the compass the compass arrow will be attracted towards (point towards) the south pole of the bar magnet and be repulsed (point away ) from the north pole of the magnet.
