Why is President Kennedy's handling of the Cuban missile crisis considered one of his greatest accomplishments?

The Cuban Missile Crisis was probably the point in history of the highest tensions, ever. The fact that the situation didn't spiral out of control is an incredible feat. In short, the fact that we are alive today and that the world is still in one piece is a miracle after the tensions during the 1960s.
