To prevent a repetition of World War 2 through control of Japan.

Explanation:

After the surrender of Japan the USA sought to establish key conditions in post war Japan to prevent a rise in militarism as happened in the 30's leading to the attack on Pearl Harbour.

Examples included the trial and execution of Japanese war criminals e.g. General Tojo, the demilitarisation of Japan's forces which to this day are limited and can only be used in certain contexts. Also Japan cannot have nuclear weapons.

The allies however retained the monarchy under Hirohito and pardoned many war criminals, measures which reflected a desire to create a perceived conservative stability as the Cold War developed.
