The water from dam is sent to power house which is situated at lower level..So potential energy is used to drive turbines and makes power.
Explanation:
After doing work the water is not allowed to flow to the river bed.It is stored in a tail pool dam..AT night after 10PM when the demand for electricity is low and surplus power is available the turbine is used as pump and the water is pumped back to the upper dam..So this can be used again..Or solar power can be used in day time to pump back water and and used as reserve for meeting peak load demand.

Same turbine is used as pump and generator is used as motor.
