Semen, which is also known as seminal fluid, is responsible for making sure that the sperm is safely transported for fertilization. So this can be considered a layer of protection for the sperm because sperms can be very fragile.
Sperm is known to be the male gamete, or sex cell. This carries half of the number of chromosomes that a typical body cell might carry. Average humans have 46 chromosomes inside of their body, but the sperm cell can contain only 23 chromosomes through meiotic cell division. In normal fertilization, these 23 chromosomes with the other 23 chromosomes from the female's egg cell fuse to make 46 chromosomes inside of a zygote.
