Chemical reactions are essential to the function of organisms. Though these chemical reactions can occur without the assistance of enzymes, the speed without enzymes would not be fast enough to sustain the organism. Therefore enzymes are essential as they speed up the chemical reactions inside an organism so they can carry out the necessary functions such as metabolism. Enzymes speed up these chemical reactions by decreasing the activation energy require for the reaction.
