If slaves grew knowledgeable, they would be capable of planning things including revolts and attacks.

Explanation:

For the safety, slaveholders made sure slaves couldn't read or write. This way, they were unable to do things that might cause freedom or hope for them.

Mainly for the sake of preventing revolts and rebellions, slaves were kept illiterate.
