The character Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte is a very strong character, asserting her independence in a time where women had a very submissive role in society.
Authors like the Bronte sisters, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and Jane Austin were unusual both in being female authors and writing fiction which either portrayed the strength of women and/or the weakness of men.
In Jane Eyre, Bronte asserts the strength and independence of Jane early in the novel when she shows support for her friend at Lowood school in the face of brutal treatment from a governor who was instrumental in sending her there.
She also shows her strength of character and her independence in her relationship with Mr Rochester.
