They were committed to the corrupt government of President Diem as a bulwark against the communist north and Vietcong. The belied was like a line of dominoes if one country fell to communism it would set off a chain reaction like a line of dominoes falling.
It can also be seen as a way by which the Mafia gained control of the heroin coming out of the Golden Triangle. Both Diem and Kennedy were assassinated within days of each other. The American military had their own customs and the bodies of dead American soldiers were used to carry heroin into the US.
