Of course you are quite probably a yank. And thus we should use the #"US liquid pint"=473*mL#. (They also use a dry pint, whose volume I forget!),

Thus #4*L# #=# #4000*mLxx("1 pint")/("473 mL")# #=# #8.5" US pints"#.

I think this is a persuasive demonstration of the absurdity of non-SI units. Pints and gallons are all very well, but when there are #"US and Imperial pints"# this is bound to cause confusion (as it probably has here!).
