The escape velocity is simply defined as the lowest speed which an object must have to be able to escape the gravitational field of a planet (or an object)

For a planet (or any spherical object) if mass #m#, radius #r#, the escape velocity is given by the relation,

#v = sqrt((2mG)/r)#

For the earth, the escape velocity is about 11.2 km/s.
