Tecumseh wanted to unite the Indian nations to block and turn back the settlement of American Colonists on Indian lands.

The British had promised the Indian Nations in 1763 that the American Colonists would not be allowed to pass the Appalachian mountains.
The American Colonists chaffed at this law and it was one of the causes of the American Revolution against the British.
After the Americans won the Revolutionary war American settlers again started crossing the Appalachian Mountains and encroaching on Indian Lands.
Tecumseh clearly saw that unless the Indian Nations united the American settlers would take over the land of each Indian Nation one nation at a time.
Tecumseh was correct the American settlers did take over all of the Indian lands in the Northwest. Tecumseh's forces were defeated at the battle of Fallen Timbers, opening up the Northwest for the American Settlers.
