Explanation:
The Brontes spent much of their lives at the parsonage in Haworth Yorkshire. The moors with their primitive features which are bleak and harsh, yet at the same time have a physical presence and attraction, figure largely in their novels.
This atmosphere is symbolic of the harshness and brutality of Lowood school which the young Jane is sent to. It is also reflected in the atmosphere Jane experiences when she goes to work for Mr Rochester and in the description of the surrounding countryside.
