I got 5 meters

Explanation:

You know that 1 meter is made up of 100 cm;
now, if you have 500 cm you'll get 5 times 100 cm or 5 meters.

If you ever get confused by conversions use ratio

500 centimetres = 5 metres

Explanation:

Known: 1 metre = 100 centimetres

Write the ratio in fraction form giving:

#("1 metre")/("100 centimetres")#

But we need 500 centimetres so it is correct to write:

#("1 metre")/("100 centimetres") =("unknown metres")/("500")#

Looking at the bottom numbers (denominators) we need to be able to change the 100 into 500

Multiply by 1 but in the form of #1=5/5#

#[1/100xx1] = ("unknown metres")/("500")#

#[1/100xx5/5] = ("unknown metres")/("500")#

#[(color(red)(5))/(color(blue)(500))] = ("unknown metres")/("500")#

#"So "color(blue)(500)" centimetres is " color(red)(5)" metres"#
