Steel wool remains a very useful cleaning product to have around the house (or lab or workshop). These days, you can get rust-resistant steel wools, tho in my younger days I remember you could get soap impregnated steel wools, and this no longer seems to be available.

Because of the thin-ness of the steel threads it tends to corrode rapidly when wet.
