Lots of people in the North did not agree with slavery, so they would break parts of the Act. Lots of Northerners helped slaves reach Canada where they would be free. They set up safe houses where escaped slaves could go until they reached Canada. Others, however, turned in free people for the reward; they were people who were never slaves and there would be no trail, and they'd be sent to the South.
