The mass spectrometer separates isotopes on the basis of their charge-to-mass ratio providing a spectrum with a number of peaks.

Explanation:

Each peak represents an isotope. The mass of each isotope is determined from the magnitude of its deflection on a spectrum whereas the abundance of each isotope is given by the area of the peak.
