Unless I have misunderstood the question, +7m and -2m respectively.

Explanation:

I am taking the liberty to answer the question in terms of displacement (i.e. a vector quantity) instead of simply distance, which is a scalar quantity. Therefore , taking the surface of the river as the reference, or 0 displacement, and assuming arbitrarily up is positive and down negative we get the answers given. -7m and +2m would be equally valid if we assume downwards is positive and upwards negative. If it is just distance, then the values remain unchanged at 7m and 2m.
