bacteria like humans also adapt so they develop something called antibiotic resistance, this is why no one barely uses penicillin anymore and this gene also transfers itself to other bacteria these genes are called jumping genes. so a common cold might go away with antibiotics or it might not depending on the bacteria if it is resistant or not
