Because of the tilt and curvature of the earth, the sun's rays always hit at an angle.
Explanation:
For purposes of simplicity, we will place the sun directly over the equator, it's actual position during the two equinoxes. The sun hits the equatorial areas at a 90 degree angle. As you move either northward or southward from the equation, the angle at which the sun's rays hit decreases with latitude.
