  • On passing electric current , the aqueous solution ( sodium chloride ) gets decomposed ( breaks ) into sodium ion ( cation ) and chloride ion ( anion ) .

  • So, the decomposition of electrolyte , when electric current is passed through it , is called as ELECTROLYSIS .

  • This process is used in extraction of metals from their ores , refining of metals etc.
