Reagan won a landslide victory against Jimmy Carter.

The conservative backlash was possible thanks to the victory of Ronald Reagan in 1966 in California, the latter stood for the ideals of Barry Goldwater who lost the preseidential election in 1964.

Despite the Watergate scandal which made the image of Republicans deplorable. Reagan managed to win on his stance of rolling back the state "Government is not the solution, government is the problem" and the end of the defense of racial minorities and women(which was very strong in the sixties and the seventies)
