Multiply both sides by $3$ to isolate $d$

$-84 * 3 = d/cancel(3) * cancel(3) -> -252 = d$

The objective is to have $d=$ something. So we need to get the $d$ on its own

Note that $d/3$ is the same as $1/3xxd$

So if we can change the $1/3$ into 1 then we have $1xxd$ which is the same as just d.

What we do to one side of the equation we also do to the other.

Multiply both sides by $color(red)(3)$

$color(green)((-84)color(red)(xx3)=d/3color(red)(xx3))$

$-252=d xx 3/3$

but $3/3=1$

$d=-252$
