What was the First Crusade?

1 Answer

It was meant to free the Holy Land in Palestine to enable pilgrims to go to Jerusalem

Explanation:

The first crusade was launched by Pope Urban II on Place de la Victoire in 1095 in Clermont-Ferrand. It was meant to free Palestine from muslim occupation. The Seljuk Turks were now ruling this holy land and prevented Christians from acomplishing their pilgrimage in Jerusalem. Jerusalem was declared to be a Holy City like Mecca.
This meant that Jerusalem was closed to all people that were not Muslim. Christian pilgrims were reported to have been enslaved by the Seljuk Turks. Previously the Shite Muslim that had controlled Jerusalem had allowed Christian pilgrims free access to the Holy Land.
