Methane is a greenhouse gas (GHG), so increased amounts of it increase the greenhouse effect, trapping more and more heat at earth's surface.
Methane is actually much more potent than the more commonly known GHG, carbon dioxide. However, methane doesn't last as long in the environment as carbon dioxide does, which is one of the reasons why we typically hear more about carbon dioxide.
