Why did the United States want to gain control of Cuba?

Cuba was exposed to communism and they were really close to the United States.
Explanation:
When Cuba gained independence, Russia (USSR at the time) and the U.S, both wanted Cuba. The Cubans wanted communism, America didn't want that, but the USSR supported that. Castro came into power promising a communist government. The USSR and Castro were getting friendly. The U.S. didn't want Cuba to become communist. Cuba did become communist thanks to the USSR. America has a trade embargo with them, but the problems between are decreasing and the U.S. has an army base in Cuba.
