Barnacles have a hard shell that can be simulated to open when wet and can close when in dry air.

Explanation:

Barnacles have adapted to living on rocky shores where they spend most of their lives attached to rocks. Because they can't move, barnacles must be survive the changing tide.
When the tide is out, barnacles close their shells, preventing them from drying out, and being eaten by birds.
When the tides come in, the barnacles are simulated to open. Now that they are open they can take in water and feed.
