De-Stalinization was put forward by Khrushchev after 1956 in order to end the totalitarian nature of the Soviet regime. Political repression remained nevertheless it was henceforth an authoritarian regime and not a totalitarian one. For the Soviet leader it was also a means to improve the image of the Soviet Union abroad which had been made negative by the violent Stalinian purges and repression.
