x = 11 & y = - 5

Explanation:

Multiply 1st equation by 5 and 2nd equation by 7, we get

x + 5 y = - 14............(i)
& x + 7 y = - 24........(ii)

Now subtract (ii) from (i) we get 2 y = - 10 or, y = - 5.

Now put the value of y = - 5 into equation no (i), we get

x + 5. ( - 5) = - 14

or, x = - 14 + 25 = 11

Hence x = 11 & y = - 5
