Colloids are particles in suspension that will either not settle out or will take a very long time to settle out. Most colloids are translucent but some look almost clear with a faint color. Colloidal solutions look cloudy because of the Tyndall effect, the way the particles scatter light. To check if a solution is a colloidal solution shine a tight beam through it. Colloids will scatter the light and it will be visible in solution. If the solution does not have colloids the beam of light will be invisible in the solution.
